Historical Heeg
In the old centre of Heeg many historical residences and gables remind you of the international trade history of this village. Heeg got his reputation after 1660 because of the eel trade to London. According to an old right eel ships from Heeg could anchor between the Tower and Billings Gate. Some old gables recall memories to this ancient time; this glorious history of this trading comes alive in the local visitors centre “De Helling”.
Centrally located in the Frisian lake area
Heeg, as it is nowadays, located between beautiful puddles and pools, can be rightfully called a unique watersports area. Due to her location Heeg has grown into one of the largest watersports locations of Friesland. In the summer months the shopping street looks more like a promenade with lounging people in siling jackets that enjoy the watersports.
