Characteristic linden-trees and “overtuinen”
IJlst is one of the smaller cities of the Frisian Eleven Cities with a charming historical centre (protected town view). Characteristic are the linden-trees , these trees are used as sunshades, together with the “overtuinen”. These “overtuinen”” are gardens that are parted from the houses by the road and in IJlst they are on both sides of the canal. Rightly so, this city was the main decor for the in 2003 appeared movie “De schippers van de Kameleon” (The skippers of the Kameleon). In earlier days IJlst was an important city for shipping; in more recent times mainly famous for its ice-skating industry. The saw mill “De Rat”, currently still in use, is also worth a visit.
